Artist Inspiration
Rupi Kaur
For me personally, the more simple the art the better. I do love highly detailed pieces, but that's not my style preference. As I was investigating artists that could inspire me, I came across Rupi Kaur. Kaur is a contemporary feminist poet and writer based in Toronto Canada. Her debut New York best selling book; Milk and Honey was my inspiration for my art and my know thyself essay. I admire her strong feministic view. She's grounded in the every day experiences of young girls. I also love the drawing included in her book. They are rather simple yet their simplicity is bold enough to send a message. For my planing sketches I tried to incorporate very simplistic drawings full of line.
PROCESS
1.) Planning Sketches
2.) Start Etching
Once I got my final sketch. I just taped the plate on top of my sketch and began to inscribe. This was the easiest and most efficient way to do it. Especially since I had quite a bit of detail, I wanted to make sure that I didn't miss any of it. I found cross hatching the best way to etch my print. I was never too familiar with this method but I consider it part of my experimentation.
FINAL RESULT
3.) Inking
I applied the oil based ink onto the plate, and using the pallet knife, I pushed the ink into the lines of my design. After, I used pieces of news print to remove ink off of the plate.
TRIALS / EXPERIMENTATION
For experimentation, I had to go back into the sketch and add more so that there would not be so much negative space. I also had to print it over multiple times to get a good clean image.
REFLECTION
The drypoint process and final product was not my biggest success compared to my block print. Taking into consideration that this was the first time ever using this method of printing, I feel that I did decent. I do believe that if I were to this print again, I would be able to accomplish a much neater version. I had a lot of trouble with the actual carving part. It was really hard to determine whether my lines were deep enough. Overall, I really enjoyed the inking process. Personally, I really like getting messy, however it was stressful having to clean the excess ink,I would love to do this method again. When it comes to my meaning and metaphor I did good again connecting it all together. The artist has strong femenistic views and I personally do believe in them. My entire know thyself essay was written based on my views on that subject.
